On October 29, 55 movements and organizations from 14 Latin American and Caribbean countries published a powerful MANIFESTO rejecting carbon markets and defending territories against an avalanche of projects that are causing damage throughout the region. This manifesto challenges COP30 of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), which will begin in the first week of November with high-level meetings.

The DEveloping country Governance REsearch and Evaluation for SRM (Degrees) Initiative’s stated aim is to facilitate the participation of countries in the Global South in research relating to the deployment and governance of solar geoengineering, referred to as Solar Radiation Management (SRM).

Nairobi, Kenya – On the surface, the Swiss resolution on Solar Radiation Modification (SRM) at UNEA-6 could appear to be a neutral call to constitute an expert group on SRM. But whether it was intentional or not, the proposed expert group could act as a Trojan horse for the advancement of solar geoengineering, creating a base for geoengineering advocates to set themselves as the main reference in global discussions on SRM.

The document containing the recent conclusions from the UN climate change conference in the United Arab Emirates (COP 28) is an egregious example of an official statement crafted to appear to be addressing a crucial problem, whilst skilfully disguising the fact that many decisions taken will actually worsen that problem. A perverse narrative has been forced through, hiding a complete lack of real action.

Press release, 4 December 2023 – Carbon offsetting has undermined real climate action, given rise to human rights and Indigenous rights violations and caused severe harm to frontline communities for over two decades. Despite this, the UN climate conference (COP28) currently underway in the United Arab Emirates is set to be one of the biggest promotional events for carbon offsets ever.

September 20, 2023 - A report published today by the international research organization ETC Group casts serious doubts on seaweed as an emerging “blue carbon” industry. Their research shows that mass seaweed plantations pose a major threat to marine ecosystems and are unlikely to capture or permanently store significant quantities of carbon.[1]

As the world scrambles for a climate fix, seaweeds – or “macroalgae” – have been thrust into the limelight. Buoyed up by hype and hundreds of millions of dollars of so called “green” investment, a new “blue carbon” seaweed industry is invading coasts and seas, ostensibly under the umbrella of the 2015 Paris Agreement on Climate Change.

Previously buried within the UNFCCC’s negotiating corridors and committees, a new technofix gold rush has been stealthily emerging in global climate change negotiations – with potentially disastrous implications for the world’s fight against climate change.

Mexico City, Mexico – A longtime watchdog on geoengineering activities, ETC Group is sounding the alarm on two recent solar geoengineering tests that have released sulfur dioxide over Baja California Sur, Mexico as part of an experiment to block the sun’s warmth from reaching the earth. A two-man start-up from the United States, calling itself Make Sunsets, is behind these tests and appears to be seeking to profit from the climate crisis.

Geoengineering – the large-scale and intentional technological manipulation of the planet’s climate – is creeping onto the agenda and into the processes of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) despite multiple concerns about potential environmental and social impacts.

Under the radar of many people and governments, several risky geoengineering techniques are being considered at UN climate negotiations. Most are speculative technologies that could cause even more climate chaos and function as a costly distraction from real solutions.
This webinar, cohosted by ETC Group and RLS will provide an overview of the likely and unlikely places where geoengineering might pop up at UN climate negotiations.

Once relegated to the fringe of the climate debate, plans to use solar geoengineering to mask rising temperatures are receiving increasing attention from some scientists, governments, and the media. Catchy headlines about silver bullet fixes often downplay the real and profound risks that such technologies pose — including potentially devastating harm to ecosystems, increased droughts and extreme weather events, and the disruption of food production for millions of people around the world.

ETC Group contributes to a new Global Citizen’s Report ‘Gates to a Global Empire’ which explores the many ways in which the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation wield immense influence across the globe, driving a form of “techno-solutionism” that prioritizes corporate power and profit and ignores over strengthening communities and sustainable solutions. Here we examine Bill Gates’ well-known promotion and funding of untested and potentially devastating geoengineering technologies, which provide cover for his less-known financial investments in fossil fuel technologies.

DAVAO, MONTREAL AND MEXICO CITY—A report from Agence France-Presse has revealed a new effort to establish the basis for a market for “climate credits” for the use of geoengineering technologies. Civil society groups are denouncing the closed-door negotiations at the International Standards Organization (ISO) that could undermine efforts to curb climate change.
