Press release, 4 December 2023 – Carbon offsetting has undermined real climate action, given rise to human rights and Indigenous rights violations and caused severe harm to frontline communities for over two decades. Despite this, the UN climate conference (COP28) currently underway in the United Arab Emirates is set to be one of the biggest promotional events for carbon offsets ever.

En muchos lenguajes del mundo, en muchas culturas campesinas, originarias, la tierra, un “predio” de suelo o tierra, no puede separarse del agua que es consustancial a ella, del “monte” o “montaña”, “el matorral”, “el bosque”, insistiendo en esa trama de relaciones,de biodiversidad, de ciclos temporales con sus propias velocidades de aparición, desaparición y repetición: toda una organización oculta de todos estos hilos, muchos de ellos anclados a los humanos.

Ante la crisis climática, con cientos de millones de dólares en publicidad y gran entusiasmo comercial por las inversiones “verdes”, una nueva industria de “carbono azul” basada en la producción industrial de algas marinas está invadiendo costas y mares, con un discurso que busca cobijo en el Acuerdo de París sobre el Cambio Climático establecido en 2015.

September 20, 2023 - A report published today by the international research organization ETC Group casts serious doubts on seaweed as an emerging “blue carbon” industry. Their research shows that mass seaweed plantations pose a major threat to marine ecosystems and are unlikely to capture or permanently store significant quantities of carbon.[1]

Buoyed up by hype and hundreds of millions of dollars of so called “green” investment, a new “blue carbon” seaweed industry is invading coasts and seas, ostensibly under the umbrella of the 2015 Paris Agreement on Climate Change.

Don’t fall for the UN’s new Food Systems Coordination Hub hype about “Transforming Food Systems for Planetary Health”. The current corporate agenda, championed by this new “Hub” is firmly focused on hijacking the UN’s existing food systems spaces to force through yet another phase of Industrial Agriculture – promoting its technofixes as solutions to the very problems that it itself has caused, including in relation to climate change and biodiversity loss.
