Se entregan Premios Capitán Garfio a los bio-piratas y Premios COG a los defensores de la biodiversidad durante el Convenio sobre Diversidad Biológica

CANCUN –  La Coalición contra la Biopiratería celebró la 6ª edición de los Premios Capitán Garfio en el marco de la 13 Conferencia de las Partes (COP13) del Convenio sobre Diversidad Biológica, este 9 de diciembre de 2016. La acción ocurrió en la entrada del edificio principal, donde se premió a cinco bio-piratas: corporaciones, gobiernos e instituciones que promueven la privatización de los recursos genéticos de los pueblos indígenas y comunidades locales. A la ceremonia de premiación asistieron organizaciones de la sociedad civil y delegados de los gobiernos.

CANCUN – The Coalition Against Biopiracy (CAB) hosted the 6th Captain Hook Awards ceremony at the Thirteenth Conference of the Parties (COP 13) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) on December 9, 2016. The public action in the main lobby of the Conference “celebrated” five biopirates – corporations, governments, and organizations that play a part to privatize genetic resources from Indigenous Peoples and local communities for profit – with an awards ceremony attended by civil society organizations and government delegates.

CANCÚN, México – Esta semana, organizaciones sociales, ambientales y sindicales publicaron un llamado en el que conminan a los gobiernos reunidos en el Convenio sobre Diversidad Biológica (CDB) de 2016 a establecer una moratoria sobre la controvertida tecnología de extinción genética conocida como de impulsores genéticos.

• The potential impacts of geoengineering on biodiversity have been scarcely studied. Studies and policy recommendations on the impacts on biodiversity and associated livelihoods caused by any geoengineering intervention are, and should remain, under the mandate of CBD and its bodies.

• New research papers continue to demonstrate high risks and uncertainties associated with the full range of geoengineering proposals.

El miércoles 14 de septiembre Monsanto aceptó finalmente la tercera oferta de Bayer para comprarla, lo que convertirá a Bayer en la mayor empresa global de agrotóxicos y semillas, además de ser una de las mayores farmacéuticas. Pero siendo de gran magnitud y con impactos de amplio alcance, es apenas una de varias fusiones recientes entre trasnacionales de agronegocios. Hay también movimientos entre las empresas de fertilizantes, de maquinarias y las que poseen bancos de datos que influyen en el proceso agrícola, en una batalla por quién controlará no sólo los mercados, sino también las nuevas tecnologías y el control digital y satelital de la agricultura.
