Groups Criticize Presidential Commission’s Recommendations on Synthetic Biology

‘Business as usual’ wins out over precaution

The Presidential Commission for the Study of Bioethical Issues released its recommendations on the oversight of synthetic biology, provoking strong criticism from public interest watchdogs for its failure to respond to key environmental and public health risks.

In a letter sent to the commission, 58 environmental, public interest, and religious groups rejected the recommendations as a deeply flawed response to advances in synthetic biology, including the creation this year of the first entirely synthetic organism, that demand strong federal oversight.

The Geoengineering Moratorium under the Convention on Biological Diversity

On 29 October 2010, the Tenth Conference of the Parties (COP 10) of the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) adopted a decision that amounts to a de facto moratorium on geoengineering and, almost as importantly, affirmed the UN’s leadership in addressing these issues. Since then, many commentators (both those opposed to and supportive of geoengineering) have circulated erroneous statements concerning the import of the decision.

El pasado 29 de octubre de 2010, la Décima Conferencia de las Partes (COP 10) del Convenio de Naciones Unidas sobre Diversidad Biológica (CDB) adoptó una decisión que representa una moratoria de facto a la geoingeniería y además (lo que es casi tan importante como esa resolución), afirmó el liderazgo de la ONU en el tratamiento de esos temas. Desde entonces, muchos analistas (tanto a favor como en contra de la geoingeniería) han hecho circular declaraciones erróneas concernientes a la importancia de esa decisión que consideramos un fundamental paso hacia delante.

À la rencontre ministérielle des Nations Unies au Japon

À la suite d’une décision par consensus sans précédent, la Conférence des 193 parties à la Convention des Nations Unies sur la diversité biologique (CDB) s’apprête à conclure sa dixième rencontre biennale avec l’adoption d’un moratoire de facto sur les projets et les expériences en géoingénierie. « Toute expérimentation, privée ou publique, ou tout aventurisme visant à manipuler le thermostat planétaire constituera une violation de ce consensus soigneusement élaboré dans le contexte des Nations Unies », a affirmé Silvia Ribeiro, directrice de l’ETC Group pour l’Amérique latine.

Los 193 países firmantes del Convenio sobre Diversidad Biológica (CDB) cerraron su décima reunión bianual con una memorable decisión consensada: establecer una moratoria de facto sobre los proyectos y experimentos de geoingeniería. "Cualquier experimento, sea de fuente pública o privada que intente ahora manipular el termostato planetario violará este consenso de Naciones Unidas, que fue cuidadosamente logrado", afirmó Silvia Ribeiro, Directora para Latinoamérica del Grupo ETC.

Risky Climate Techno-fixes Blocked

In a landmark consensus decision, the 193-member UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) closed its tenth biennial meeting with a de facto moratorium on geoengineering projects and experiments. “Any private or public experimentation or adventurism intended to manipulate the planetary thermostat will be in violation of this carefully crafted UN consensus,” stated Silvia Ribeiro, Latin American Director of ETC Group.

Las corporaciones más grandes del mundo de semillas y agroquímicos están llenando cientos de solicitudes de patentes de amplísimo espectro sobre genes múltiples, en una apuesta por controlar la biomasa vegetal del planeta, según el informe del Grupo ETC publicado este lunes 25 de octubre.

Un puñado de corporaciones multinacionales están presionando a los gobiernos para que acepten, mediante el sistema de patentes, el apropiamiento de la biodiversidad más amplio y peligroso de la historia, advierte el Grupo ETC en Nagoya, durante la reunión del Convenio sobre Diversidad Biológica.
