Below you will find a series of articles on biofuels, originally written in Spanish by one of ETC Group’s researchers. (Unfortunately, English translations are not always available). Biofuel production is currently a much-debated topic in Latin America. The prominent farmers’ organizations in the region believe that the production of biofuels will lead to further marginalization and erosion of the lands which are currently being used for food production.

Silvia Ribeiro* Malí, que alojó en febrero 2007 el Foro Mundial de Soberanía Alimentaria “Nyéléni”, es uno de los diez países más pobres del mundo, si se mide en dinero. Sin embargo el país tiene recursos como oro y algodón —del cual es uno de los principales productores del continente—, pero la herencia colonial y las imposiciones de la Organización Mundial de Comercio, el FMI y el Banco Mundial han sumido a su población en la miseria. Aún así, Malí sigue siendo un país rico.

Silvia Ribeiro* Cada vez más queda más claro que los agrocombustibles no solamente no son una panacea ambiental para enfrentar el cambio climático, sino por el contrario, lo van a empeorar. Al mismo tiempo van sentando las bases para nuevas crisis alimentarias y de escasez de agua, junto a la expulsión de campesinos e indígenas de sus tierras, todo ello con amplias repercusiones económicas, sociales y ambientales negativas, principalmente para las poblaciones del tercer mundo.

Over Forty Groups Release Fundamental Principles for Nanotech Oversight, Citing Risks to the Public, Workers, and the Environment

WASHINGTON, DC – With the joint release of Principles for the Oversight of Nanotechnologies and Nanomaterials, a broad international coalition of consumer, public health, environmental, labor, and civil society organizations spanning six continents called for strong, comprehensive oversight of the new technology and its products.

The manufacture of products using nanotechnology–a powerful platform for
manipulating matter at the level of atoms and molecules in order to alter properties–has exploded in recent years. Hundreds of consumer products incorporating nanomaterials are now on the market, including cosmetics, sunscreens, sporting goods, clothing, electronics, baby and infant products, and food and food packaging. But evidence indicates that current nanomaterials may pose significant health, safety, and environmental hazards. In addition, the profound social, economic, and ethical challenges posed by nano-scale technologies have yet to be addressed.

No Substance to SBSTTA’s Recommendations as Debate on Agrofuels and Geoengineering Fizzles

ETC Group attended the 12th meeting of the scientific advisory body (SBSTTA) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), which met in Paris 2-6 July 2006. Expectations were high that SBSTTA would tackle new and emerging issues on its agenda: agrofuels (a.k.a. biofuels) and climate change. Despite the urgency of these matters, some governments managed to block meaningful recommendations and put a chill on biodiversity’s hottest topics.

Sintia, un microbio sintético diseñado en laboratorio podría estar buscando una madre sustituta muy pronto. Según un reporte de investigación publicado el viernes 29 de junio 2007 en la revista Science, Sintia (que será patentada tan pronto aparezca: “El Instituto Venter busca patentar el primer organismo vivo totalmente sintetizado en laboratorio,” tal vez ya libró su último obstáculo.

Iron flakes - more on Planktos Inc. and ocean iron fertilization - (En español abajo)

You'd think that after some of the world’s most eminent marine biologists attacked it; the IPCC report dumped on it; and the IMO’s scientific group to the London Convention last week passed the equivalent of an emergency motion advising it not to proceed - that Planktos Inc. would go to ground or hoist a white flag before it sinks in embarrassment.

The BP-Berkeley deal, the new joint Bio Energy institute, and also the recent job hop by John Menlo of BP fuels to Amyris Biotech - are all extra strings tying the interests of the Syn Bio community as a wholeever closer to the interests of big business. It should be noted that in each of thse cases CEO Keasling plays a central role. The same man who claims to be developing Synthetic Biology to serve the worlds poor (via synthetic artemisinin) seems to be rather busy these days serving the fabulously rich.

"I think this is going to become the foundational technology of the 21st century" - that was the triumphant message with which Tom Knight of MIT brought Synthetic Biology 3.0 to an end today. An engineering generalist who moved from artificial intelligence to artificial life, it was Knight who, along with Drew Endy, developed the concept of biobricks -- snap-together genetic parts from which to assemble Lego-like genes.

En Zurich la sociedad civil demanda control urgente sobre la creación de organismos sintéticos

Científicos e industriales en el controvertido nuevo campo de la biología sintética (la construcción de formas de vida desde cero) se reúnen en Zurich, Suiza, con la expectativa de que el primer ser vivo totalmente construido por seres humanos está prácticamente a unas semanas de su creación. Grupos de Suiza y de la sociedad civil internacional demandan que se controle esta tecnología, pero los científicos intentan evadir la regulación adelantándose con propuestas para evadirla. Mientras los científicos se reúnen en Zurich, la Royal Society del Reino Unido y el gobierno Suizo anuncian planes para investigar la biología sintética.

'The cool' and 'the concerned' -- that was how Zurich-based ethicist Nicola Biller Andorno today aptly characterised the two tribes attending Synthetic Biology 3.0...The cool, in her lexicon, are the synthusiasts, those who regard making synthetic life forms as...like...hey dude, that's like, so cool. The concerned, roughly speaking, is made up of people like us (we've never been accused of being cool). Namely, the dour civil society and social scientists whose gut reaction to making new life forms is -- er.. that's concerning.

Scientists and industrialists in the controversial new field of synthetic biology (building life-forms from scratch) are meeting in Zurich, Switzerland this week amidst claims that the world’s first entirely human-made organism may be only weeks away from creation. Swiss and international civil society groups are calling for swift action to control this technology but the scientists themselves are advancing pre-emptive proposals to evade regulation. As scientists meet in Zurich, the UK’s Royal Society and the Swiss government announce plans to investigate synthetic biology.

Synthetische Biologie beinhaltet die künstliche – oder eben synthetische – Herstellung von Genen, Lebewesen oder Teilen davon. Es ist ein neues Feld extremer Gentechnik.

Vom 24. bis 26. Juni 2007 fand an der ETH Zürich der dritte weltweite Kongress zur Synthetischen Biologie statt. Schweizerische und internationale Organisationen fordern die Regierungen zu schnellem Handeln auf, um diese neue und potentiell gefährliche Technologie zu regulieren und zu kontrollieren.

Fertilización con hierro del océano a escala comercial Organismo científico internacional descalifica estrategia de geoingeniería

El viernes 22 de junio 2007 el comité científico del Convenio de Londres sobre prevención de la contaminación del mar por vertimientos de desechos y otras materias acordó, en su sesión plenaria al término de su reunión en España, emitir una “Declaración de preocupación” advirtiendo que la fertilización con hierro de superficies del océano —para captura de carbono a escala comercial— entraña riesgos ambientales y carece de evidencia científica de su efectividad. La declaración de preocupación obedece a la noticia de que Planktos, una empresa con oficinas en San Francisco, Budapest y Vancouver está a punto de verter 100 toneladas de nanopartículas de hierro en un área de 10 mil kilómetros cuadrados del Océano Pacífico, en las cercanías de las Islas Galápagos. El objetivo de la compañía es vender bonos de carbono asumiendo sin respaldo científico que el hierro puede estimular el florecimiento del fitoplancton que a su vez podría capturar dióxido de carbono de manera permanente. “Este es un llamado de emergencia al Convenio de Londres de la Organización Marítima Internacional en pleno para que tomen cartas en el delicado asunto de someter al océano a las estrategias de geoingeniería, ahora que los gobiernos que lo integran se reúnan en Londres del 5 al 9 de noviembre de este año”, demandó Jim Thomas del Grupo ETC.

These 'Synthusiasts' are now into their third annual international congress, Synthetic Biology 3.0, each conference named like a software update. Unlike software updates however it's not clear they've really ironed out the major bugs in the intervening years.

Intergovernmental scientific body fires shot across geoengineer’s bow

An intergovernmental scientific committee of the London Convention on ocean dumping agreed at its closing plenary in Spain, to a tough consensus “statement of concern” warning that iron fertilization of ocean surfaces – as an attempt at commercial carbon sequestration – has environmental risks and lacks scientific evidence of effectiveness. The statement was triggered by news that Planktos, Inc. a for-profit enterprise with offices in San Francisco, Budapest, and Vancouver is about to dump 100 tons of iron nanoparticles over a 10,000 km² stretch of Pacific Ocean in the vicinity of the Galapagos Islands. The company’s goal is to sell carbon offsets on the unproven assumption that the phytoplankton bloom created by the iron dumping could lead to the permanent sequestration of CO2 greenhouse gases. “Its a very strong statement – literally an emergency call for the full London Convention [of the International Maritime Organization] to take up the threat of ocean geoengineering when governments convene in London this November 5-9,” says Jim Thomas of ETC Group, en route to Europe. “By publicizing the scientific body’s concern now, governments are bluntly warning companies that there could be national and international regulatory repercussions from commercial iron dumping.” Planktos has already been advised by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency that commercial iron dumping by a U.S. flagged ship could be in violation of EPA rules. In response, the company has told US officials that it will either find another flag or another ship. Although the company has said that it intends to dump 100 tons of iron particles in a stretch of ocean somewhere near the Galapagos Islands this month, the whereabouts of its vessel, the Weatherbird II, is not clear and ETC Group believes the boat to still be docked at Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
